Water Heater Repair and Replacement

Water heaters have a big impact on energy efficiency.  Today, everyone is looking for ways to save money.  By increasing your water heater's efficiency, you can decrease your energy costs. 

Tips to improve your energy efficiency:

 - Repair leaky faucets and shower heads.  A leak of one drip per second can cost roughly $1 per month.

 - Take quick showers instead of baths.  It takes 15-25 gallons of hot water for a bath and less than 10 gallons of water for a 5 minute shower.

 - Turn down the thermostat on your water heater.  By turning down the heat you are reducing the amount of power required.

 - Install low-flow shower heads and aerators in faucets.  This can cut your hot water usage by half.

 - Convert to a gas-fired water heater.  Think "long term" about a change like this.  Gas-fired water heaters can last for 15-20 years without needing any sort of repair.

Your hot water heater is a storage tank that heats and then holds water.  Here are some basic problems that you may encounter:

1.  Your water heater is not heating the water.  - This could be happening because the pilot light has gone out or because of a  malfunctioning thermostat. 

2.  You run out of hot water while you still need it.  - It could be that your termostat is not set properly.  Another cause could be a build up of deposits inside the tank (this reduces the tank capacity).

3.  There is a strange smell coming from your water.  - This is usually caused from bacteria in the tank. 

4.  You hear strange noise coming from your water heater. -  There could be sediment build-up inside the tank and the heating element is literally burning it, or the heating element may be slowly burning out.

5.  There is a leak coming from your water heater.  There could be a leak in the draincock, or a leaking safety valve, or a hole in the tank.
